Gambia: Introducing Emotional Learning in Early Childhood Education

Through educating youths on social and emotional learning World Faith Gambia is making waves of positive change in rural Gambia. This initiative started after the chapter was contacted by Think Equal, a global initiative which calls for a systemic change in education by introducing social and emotional learning as a compulsory new subject. Think Equal believe that teaching children that all humans are equal and need to be equally valued, they will foster a generation that is more empathetic, loving, respectful, and open. Upon seeing World Faith Gambia’s effective work in the field, they asked them to introduce an emotional and play-based curriculum in rural Gambia’s early childhood education centers.
To date, teachers from 20 schools across five regions have been introduced to this new curriculum and continued to develop their approach and pedagogy through ongoing one on one training. Think Equal has also shared a wealth of teaching materials to support educators in their curriculum development and daily educational needs.
World Faith Gambia’s good work in the sector of early childhood education is a hopeful reminder of how education and love can make the world a more peaceful, less violent place to live and flourish.
